Information about Benedictine University Navy ROTC, registering in a technical degree program to develop job skills, and taking free practice tests online. Which college degrees will give you the best chances of finding employment after graduation? Some students select a major because it offers practical training that will be valuable in the workplace. Other students choose their major simply because they enjoy the subject material. Majoring in a technical field demands a lot of concentrated study, but the financial rewards are equally impressive. The most popular college major is business administration, split evenly between men and women. On the other hand, men make up the vast majority of computer science and engineering majors. For women, the fields of education, English and liberal arts dominate the list.

You don't have to be currently enrolled in a degree program in order to sign up for online courses. Distance education enables students who otherwise wouldn't be able to make the commute to campus to access accredited courses. If you so choose, online education gives you the opportunity to take difficult courses that won't show up on your transcript. Alternatively, you may be able to complete online credits for a grade. Advanced Placement exams (AP Exams) are offered in a variety of subjects, offering college credit for classes that you have taken. Test yourself with free practice exams, before visiting the College Board website to register to take your actual AP Tests. If you earn a score of 3 or higher on an AP Exam, you may be granted advanced placement in college.

Online Courses - MOOCs

Benedictine University Navy ROTCGraduates with bachelors degrees typically earn 60% more than employees with only a high school diploma, adding up to an $800,000 difference in earnings over a lifetime. If you remain true to your career interests, not just going after salary, your overall job earnings will increase as you gain experience. However, if your focus is more on salary alone, there's a higher risk that you'll suffer early signs of burnout, and be forced to change careers later on.

Technical training programs are a low-cost alternative to attending a regular four-year college, and still you may earn good money as a highly-skilled, technical specialist. By taking some of your required degree courses online, you may be able to graduate earlier, thus saving money on tuition. If you're currently employed, you can take online courses in your spare time to advance your career. Massive Open Online Courses are known as MOOCs, utilizing cloud-based software, interactive platforms such as Blackboard, and mobile apps.

An online degree may be just as marketable as a college degree that was earned on campus. Udemy online learning is a new startup with backing from the founders of Groupon. Similarly, Khan Academy now offers over 4,000 micro-lectures served through YouTube. Coursera, a competing software platform, has millions of enrolled students from around the world. Recently, MIT announced that it's open courseware platform will be available to students and instructors at no cost.

Financial Aid Awards

The US Department of Education distributes $150 billion per year in grants, work-study, and low-interest student loans. Surprisingly, elite colleges and universities offer the greatest financial aid opportunities for students, due to their enormous endowments. To begin the search for financial aid, you'll need to fill out the FAFSA, the federal student aid application. Please note that financial aid deadlines are strictly enforced, so submit your application early. Literally millions of students that would have qualified for some financial aid didn't even apply for it, or were late in submitting required forms. The official FAFSA website is fafsa.ed.gov. Many parents make errors when filling out the FAFSA, including forgetting to click the 'submit' button, leaving out some fields instead of entering a zero, or incorrectly entering their social security number.

Grants, Scholarships, and Loans

A Federal Pell Grant, unlike student loans, does not have to be repaid. Pell Grants are awarded only to undergraduate students who have never earned a bachelors or professional degree. The grant distribution will depend on demonstrated financial need, according to the FAFSA application, the cost of attendance, your status as a full-time or part-time student, and your plans to attend school for a full academic year or less. You may not receive Federal Pell Grant funds from any more than one educational institution at a time.

Students who receive Federal Pell Grants and have extreme financial need will receive FSEOG grants first. The FSEOG grant program is administered directly by participating schools, so check with your financial aid office to find out if your school offers the FSEOG. Each participating school receives a certain amount of FSEOG funds each year from the US Department of Education, via the office of Federal Student Aid. This system works differently from the Federal Pell Grant Program, which provides grant funding to each eligible student.

The Scholarships.com website rates the relevancy of each scholarship, but FastWeb.com offers a larger scholarship database. As they are usually ineligible for federal student loans, international students in the United States can obtain private loans with a cosigner who is a US citizen. Student loans typically have variable interest rates while federal student loans have fixed rates, and borrowers should be aware that some private loans require substantial up-front origination fees as well. Finally, student credit cards may seem like a good short-term solution to financial need, but the interest rates are high, and credit cards often carry an annual fee. If you do end up using credit cards to meet some expenses, pay off the outstanding balance in full every month.

Create a Part-time Income Online

The goal here is to show you how to design a simple website that gets listed on search engines, and is able to generate a cash-flow within a few months. Sure, you've seen lots of sites telling you that it's easy to make money online, but if it was that easy, everyone would be rich. The truth is that creating a part-time income for yourself is possible, but it's a fair amount of work up-front. If you keep working on it a few hours a week, you can increase your daily earnings as your website develops. The basics are as follows:
Website Design Course
(6 steps to learn)
  1. Get a hosting package. Costs $5/mo, including a domain name.
  2. Website design can be simplified, using templates and RSS feeds.
  3. Write one 900 word article daily, with original photos.
  4. Drive search engine traffic via on-page optimization.
  5. Get approved to Google AdSense, and other affiliate programs.
  6. Earn money, beginning with $1/day, and keep publishing.

Doing business online is one of your best options to raise extra income. Success is governed by two main factors, visitor traffic and sales conversions. There's no rent to pay when starting a business online, unless you count yearly domain name registration and monthly website hosting, both of which are minor. The easiest way to start is by opening a Wordpress blog, and monetizing with Google AdSense pay-per-click ads. If you've tried Adsense before, but only made a few cents per click, you have a lot of learning to do. Just making a website isn't enough, if no-one can find it. You'll then need online marketing skills, and the ability to drive conversions. All of this takes work.
